Spells in Salt and Sanctuary are on the forms of Magic. In order to use them one must have the appropriate Class of Magic Skill. The Magic Stat increases the effectiveness of Spells. Besides Elemental and Dark Spells as below, there are Incantations. See their page for details.
To use Magic, Prayers or Incantations you must have the appropriate points spent in the Tree of Skill in order to use them. You can slot up to 6 Spells at once in your inventory screen and can cycle through them using left and right on the D-Pad. Using Spells will consume Focus and will lower your max Stamina. The more Spells you cast before you rest in a Sanctuary the more Stamina you will lose and eventually you won't be able to cast Spells. You can reduce the amount of Stamina you lose by using some Rings and you can regain Stamina by using Phials (which you can unlock in the Tree of Skill). Putting points into the Willpower Stat will increase the number of Spells you can cast between rests.
Magic damage values use both the Spell's damage and the current weapon's damage.
Scaled Spell Damage = spell_base * (1 + Stat * 0.02).
Further scaling is given by the formula: [Scaled Spell/Inc/Prayer Damage] * (0.5 + [Scaled Weapon Physical Damage] * 0.025).
Due to how damage works, using Incantations and Prayers with a high damage mainhand weapon can be valuable.
Offhand weapons are prioritized for magic damage calculations. E.g. Using an incantation with a Hammer & Wand or a Sword + Pistol.
The two-handed weapon bonus from Strength does not apply to magics.

Equipping note: Incantations are equipped on the bottom row of the inventory screen sharing the same slots as Prayers.
Damage note: Both Dark Swarm and Lightning Storm scale with the damage of your held weapon. The higher the weapon's damage the more damage these incantations will do.

Prayers are a form of Magic mostly comprised of buffs and heals. Prayers are enabled when obtaining the Cleric class node on the skill tree -- located in the bottom right quadrant. To obtain prayers you must purchase them from the stone cleric or find them within the world. Prayers have Cleric class levels prerequisits to use. (e.g. Cleric level 3 can use Prayer level 3 and below). If you do not meet the prerequisit for Prayers you will see an "X" across the Prayer Icon. The Wisdom Stat increases the effectiveness of Prayers. Prayers are defensive and healing or support arts mostly. Once you buy a prayer, slot it on the spell slots under your regular inventory, then during play use the directional left and right buttons to select it and R1 to activate. There are no gear requirements.

From what I've seen in game incantations seem to scale off your weapons unmodified physical damage so in theory a pure melee build with minimum magic investment can out damage a pure caster with 50 magic and the best staff available provided the spell is a incantation(with the exception of arcane weapon and venomous blade which scale with the magic stat itself not sure about poison gas) if that's true incantations(and probably some prayers) are more suited for hybrid or pure str/dex characters then pure magic/wisdom ones... How wonderfuly strange (sorry for the great wall of text)

if you use dark spells or incantations they will do a lot of damage usually but they also have a drawback, they put a Debuff on you that reduces your resistance (you can't see it on your defense list) the debuff applied is similar to flask of defilement

So I hit a knight with a sword and let him hit me ok I am not dead then I heal!! I cast dark swarm it hits him then I let him hit me and boom every time he one shots me after the incantation!! So are incantations supposed to leave you so vulnerable after casting or does your defense come back after a minute or what??

Can I get Magic Spells 3 and to use Level 3 spells, but not get Magic Spells 1 and 2 and not use those spells. I'm basically asking, are the perquisites for spell casting through the feats tree.

If the quick menu slot system have four or more items, images are not being displayed correctly. On my cleric build, it only shows one prayer, yet the healing flask icon would double as the next prayer. It surely is confusing during boss battle and lead to unecessary death.

I have yet to find a level 5 spell and don't see any listed here... Anyone find a level 5 spell. The most o have found is level 4 dragonfire which requires level 7 devotion.

There is only 1 slot for spell and it seems you must only use whatever equipped. Sure you can go to menu and change it before boss fight but is there a way to switch spell during the fight without having to go to menu?

So, the House of Splendor does not sell it. I see it's listed here, but when you go to the page about each of those creeds, it does not say the mage sells the Dragonfire spell.

Ok, so have been making a hybrid strength/mage. I have a bunch of incantations, but I can't figure out how to use them for the life of me. I have the appropriate magic levels, but it seems like it will only allow me to equip spells, but no incantations.

This list is incomplete - just as merchants, clerics and mages sell more stuff the more devoted you are to the Creed. And these items and spells are unique to each Creed. I've seen some uber spells in The Order of the Betrayer at rank 7.
How do I unlock other prayers at the stone cleric? I found only cleanse and revive and I wanna buy Divine Armor.
