Brands are special key abilities in Salt and Sanctuary. To unlock them, you must find specific NPCs and interact with them, and agree to be branded.
Each brand has a unique effect that will allow you to access different areas and events of the game
Vertigo Brand
A word of power carried in a brand. Bearing the brand grants its owner power over gravitas. Wear this brand to gain the ability to use Eminent Obelisks.
Locations: Gift: Mad Jester (jester)
Dart brand
A word of power carried in a brand. Bearing the brand grants its owner power over impetus. Wear this brand to gain the ability to perform the Mid-Air Dash feat (press [rt] while airborne).
Locations: Gift: Black Sands Sorcerer (choppy)
Shadowflip Brand
A word of power carried in a brand. Bearing the brand grants its owner mastery of shadows. Wear this brand to gain the ability to perform wall jumps (press [X] while jumping toward a wall).
Locations: Gift: The Despondent Thief (despondent)
Redshift Brand
A word of power carried in a brand. Bearing the brand grants its owner power over matter. Wear this brand to imbue your torch with a light allowing you to pass through the red arcane obstructions known as Redshift.
Locations: Gift: The Mirekeeper (swampfriend)
Hardlight Brand
A word of power carried in a brand. Bearing the brand grants its owner power over matter. Wear this brand to imbue your torch with a light allowing you to render blue arcane matter tangible.
Locations: Gift: The Domekeeper (domefriend)

In the Steam Achievements there are 6 brands but in the game there are just 5, why is that?
You can get Shadowflip before you beat a boss. If you got the hops.
