The Unspeakable Deep is the intro Boss in Salt and Sanctuary. It is fought upon the boat the players begin at. While defeating it rewards the player with goods, it is not required to beat it, as the game moves on regardless of the players actions.

A Kraekan in its most common form. Creatures like these once had a name, but sailors so feared possibly conjuring one by speaking its name that referring to them as simply the Deep became widespread. Whatever their true name is, it has since been lost to the deep, dark sea."

Combat Information

  • Attack Types: Physical, Knockback
  • Weak vs: Elements
  • Strong vs: Slash and Strike

Phase 1

  • Jump Attack - Crouches slightly, then jumps forward a long distance. Deals very high damage and causes knockback. Creates shockwaves on landing. Has no tracking
    • The hitbox starts once he jumps. The hitbox covers the whole body while jumping, as well as the landing zone. Has high recovery.
    • Because this attack is highly telegraphed, the player has enough time to roll into the boss, and hit it once. This makes it ideal for punishing the boss when the player has the stamina to do so.
    • Be wary of driving the boss to a wall, because he can start with this attack and the player will not have a place to roll into, essentially trapping itself unless they run away very quickly at the start of this move.

  • Strike - Rears back and raises one of its arms, punching the ground in front of him. This punch also generates small shockwaves on the point of impact. Has no tracking at all, and extremely long recovery. Deals high damage.
    • One of the best attacks to punish the boss. It raises his hitbox slightly, and has long recovery, which means the player only needs to roll once to get behind it, and start attacking while he performs it. Be mindful of your stamina for the remaining moves, however.

  • Slam - Raises his body and tries to slam with both fists at once. This attack comes out faster than the other ones, and has small recovery. Deals extremely high damage, and is able to oneshot most classes. Generates shockwaves and can reach up to his legs.
    • It's advised to run and roll into the boss, as the boss' hitbox moves up when doing this, allowing the player to get closer to the back, then roll to get behind safely.
    • Do not attempt to attack the boss when he's finished doing this move. Not only he performs it faster, he also has almost no recovery when he finishes. This means he can turn around and follow up with this move again, making it risky for players if they don't manage their stamina.

Phase 2

  • None. The boss remains the same until death.

General Strategy

The Unspeakable Deep is a slow but hard hitting boss. His attack patterns are very easy to read, but in most cases one hit is enough to take down your whole health bar. There is only a single chance to beat him per character (cannot fight again in New Game+), and if you fail to beat him you must create a new character from scratch. To get through the game intro fast, press A to skip the text and then remove enough clothing to get <25% equip load for fast roll. Jump over the first NPC, rolling past the enemies and out the door before they catch up.

Equip load under 25% is advised, as it allows for fast rolling behind his massive body and doing up to 1-2 attacks before switching sides and going for next attack. With careful play and patience, one can bring it down eventually.
When the boss dies, your character can barely move on the animation to pick up the gold. Once the death animation ends (which is when the gold actually spawns), they won't be able to move at all. This means that if one wishes to also get the gold, the player must position themselves carefully on the finishing hit to pick it up when the boss dies.

Class-related strategies

Cleric is one of the easiest classes to beat him with, since not only does it start with a damaging weapon (the Mace) but it also starts with blessed pages and Mend. The cleric should remove their pants to get fast roll and they will be able to survive a single hit and heal back to full health, meaning they can get hit at least four times before dying if they can escape to heal up (but only indirectly, e.g. leaping or shockwave, getting hit by his overhead fists is an insta-kill). Utilize the blessed pages for more damage output and get next to him, rolling past him whenever he attacks or leaps and hitting him a couple times. If he gets too close to the edge you can bait him forward.

Paladin is also a good class to kill him with since it starts with five Lightvessels that do heavy damage when thrown and a powerful weapon - Morning Star. However, their heavy armor can be detrimental, so the player must remove it to roll normally.

Pauper's pitchfork does a lot of damage to him with its strong attack, as it hits twice. However, it consumes almost half of your stamina bar and has medium recovery, so it's advised to not spam it carelessly.

Player Notes

  • Killing him grants one of the few Black Pearls that can be found during the game (useful for a Level 1 playthrough).
  • It's advised to kill this boss, as it's one of the very few occasions you can get your hands on a Drowned Tome (allowing you to get two drowned tomes on the first ng cycle, instead of just one).
  • The Shimmering Pearl is a material unobtainable until much later game, unless you get it from this boss. It also sells for a decent price in the early game, if the player knows they won't need it at all.
  • While fight is long and tedious, it is worth effort for some extra gold and salt that will grant some early level ups.
  • In appearance, it closely resembles the character Cthulhu from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. In its role in game, it most resembles the Vanguard Demon from Demon's Souls (the precursor to Dark Souls), as while beating it grants great early game drops, it is not required for progression.

So I found my own little way of beating this guy that doesn't involve basically stripping naked (except for knight and paladin anyway). Any class with a strength based weapon should two hand and from there I basically spend the entire battle running into the boss and simply rolling through where needed, single roll for all except his jumping attack (though if your naked you only need a single roll there too). After that you get one whack in from behind (maybe two for daggers and swords). I've managed a few goes now without getting hit, it's just a case of being extremely patient and not getting greedy with your attacks.

Wait... how did the bandits get on the ship? If the Deep was there, how could they get on? Maybe the Deep came after them... GASP ARE THEY WORKING TOGETHER *0*

In my first game for some reason I didn't start on the ship so I couldn't fight this boss.
En mi primer juego, por alguna razón, no comencé en el barco, así que no pude luchar contra este jefe.

This guy is just bullsh|t!!! Attacks are far too easy to avoid, BUT he kills you in one hit and takes forever to beat, so you will make a mistake sooner or later and then have to deplete his health all over again! ESPECIALLY if you chose chef!!! And if you die once, you have to reset the entire game to retry!!! WHY??? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING WHEN DESIGNING THIS BOSS??? (After dieing multiple times i had to change to Paladin and by a MIRACLE i beat him first try with Paladin. Ruined my chef run)

Easily the most difficult boss in the game (which is truly a shame)
Literally every other boss in the game will be beaten on first attempt, or second at most.
Except going back to kill this guy is a pain in the ass LOL

                >pick pauper (deprived?)
                >get naked
                >use a strong attack + a light attack (24 dmg each dodge)
                >stonks

If you do the ladder glitch on the ladder just in front of the festering banquet you can get back up to him for an easy fight

it would be great if they patched the game so you could fight it in ng+ also they should have a cutscene with the so called princess. just saying it would be nice if they introduced the character they clearly have a model already in the game, such a shame to waste. they could have the boat crash while talking with her if you kill the unspeakable deep that way there is time to get the gold and items it drops.

So last week I beat this boss for the first time. Since then, I've beaten it three more times. My "pro" tip. Go nude into this fight. Armour doesn't matter in a fight where one hit kills you. You want speed. Dodge behind it and stay behind it. Only swing once or twice. Three will get you hit so don't get greedy. The Unspeakable Deep will work the fight into the corner. Once that happens back off. Run to the other end of the arena and let it work itself back to the centre. You want and need room to dodge. Also, turn up your brightness. This fight is dark. As for weapons, that doesn't matter too much. My first time beating it was with the mace, second with spear, and third a whip. Use what your comfortable with and be patient.

wait... how could the wiki know about his hp and info on ng+7
you can only fight this boss just on ng,, on later cycles you will start the game on the Iceland and you can't fight him ever again.

I just beat this thing after about 45 minutes of rage and I only got the salt. It didn’t give me any time to run and get the gold. Also, I have no new items in my inventory...what did I do wrong?

                            • Anonymous

this boss is cancer. they had to have updated it recently so you cant beat him or something. you literally get no chance to move or even attack. he just uses the jump attack almost immediately and you cannot avoid that no matter what. ive tried rolling through it right before he hits the ground. ive tried rolling past him before he makes the jump. its completely unavoidable. and i went through the game having almost no problems with any of the bosses. this boss is retarded.

You just need to get past him or slay him if you want because killing him is not part of the story. its just there if you want to slay it.

Glitch to kill him in NG+ on PC09 Jun 2016 18:30There is a levitation glitch using a ladder that allows to get back to the ship area and kill him. Here is how it goes :1 - In the options, remap the jump and roll actions on a same button (preferably one easy to access, you will have to spam it)2 - Go to the entrance of the festering banquet3 - If you haven't yet, kick the ladder just above the entrance4 - Get onto the ladder, (preferably on the lower part)5 - Hold up, and press your roll + jump button repeatedlyYou should start ascending up and backward, and eventually reach the boat area (that is actually up in the sky). Then you can attempt to kill the unspeakable deep and leave usinc a bell of return or a calling horn.Using this method, it's possible to kill him in NG+, and he actually drops more salt!

This boss drops exactly 8010 gold. To get them coins, start with Pauper class. When the boss gets to 1 hit from defeat, bait its one-handed slow fist slam and then kill it with the pitchfork's lunge attack (Y/Triangle) while being close to it and before it attacks. You will land exactly where the gold drops. Guaranteed ! The pitchfork's makes quick work of it (4 minutes).

I managed to get him to jump in the right corner, and rolled into him then deliver final hit so all the gold rained on me.Got a total of 8292 when i spawned at beach, and im guessing since salt was 8120 that the 292 and 120 was from the starting enemys one encounters + the pots... so i would say a good estimate was 8000 gold and 8000 salt (maybe even 8100-8100).

Its a shame really that they didn't make as a "Boss you can hardly scratch in the start" to have it mop the floor with you. Only to then fight it again later on when you actually have nice gear and so forth. But that's just me being bugged when a cool Cthulu boss gets wasted in the Prologue :'c

The thief seems to be the best character to do this fight. But instead of going in naked and getting OHKO if you do a mistake, undress but still keep your rogue jacket. You'll still be fast enough to run and roll around the boss, but you'll be able to take a hit.Maybe even two if you manage to heal yourself with shards.

                                            • Anonymous

Never get greedy with this fight. Only take 1-2 swings when he's open and roll through him as he's about to attack. When he reaches his second phase, I say only take 1 swing since he can 180 you, costing you the whole run. Hope this helps a bit. Also, the clerics Blessed Pages are REALLY good, so use that.

I've noticed after killing, it drops gold that you can't get because the game freezes your character in place. I tried again and right after killing him I managed to pick some of the gold up and got around 5K. They need to fix that so you can pick it up.
