Obsidian Pillar in Salt and Sanctuary is a Greathammer type weapon.

An enormous jet-black warhammer used by the Armor Guardians of the Castle of Storms. Few living creatures can withstand a blow from this veritable mountain of hardened iron and fewer still can so much as lift it, let alone carry it into battle. This early example was meant to be wielded by King Jaret's royal guards, but when the design proved too heavy for living soldiers it was modified for use by the King's towering golems instead. Its practical utility in the hands of an ordinary saltborn is questionable at best.

Notes and Tips:

  • At 50 STR this weapon will have an Attack of 171.2.
  • Two-handing a weapon increases Strength by 50% for damage scaling, meaning you only need 34 Strength to reach the 50 Strength soft cap when two-handing a weapon.
  • Because of the low scaling but high base damage, this weapon is really strong if obtained early and allows you to focus on other stats than strength untill you can get a better Greathammer.
  • This weapon has the highest base damage in the game, making it work exceptionally well with consumable weapon buffs such as the Blessed Page (weapon buffs add damage relative to the weapon's base damage).
  • Though with lower strength scaling, it still slightly outperforms the Warhammer at 50 strength. However, a full upgrade requires a Drowned Tome, which is extremely scarce, while the Warhammer only needs an A King's Order to fully upgrade.

It's been said before (many times too) but this thing is an absolute monster with the way weapon buffs work pre-enhanced, and I love it for it. Plus it looks sleek.
If you're running this beauty with Divine Blessed Weapon on a melee build in Classic, get the Purifier as your slash damage option for that buff-matching holy bonus.
They're a match made in heaven, these two.

There are other Holy slashing weapons to choose from, but they're all class 5. The Purifier is only class 3 (which is honestly ridiculous with how good of a weapon that one is too), so it lets you save some precious points for WIS, or whatever else you may need.

Stupid powerful. With 50 str, 50 wis, divine blessed weapon, blood ring+charm and goldenwine, one strong attack kills Bloated Monstrosities even on NG+7. 2 light attacks kills things of arms and 3 light attacks crypt keepers. Need to supplement 50 str with either 50 wis and divine blessed weapon or 50 magic and arcane weapon, otherwise you're better off with Trinity Scepter.

It's also not THAT heavy by late late game. If you're an endurance build, you'll eventually (NG+5 / NG+6) be able to 2H this and be under 25% load in full Umbral armour. There aren't quite enough endurance points to wear this, full umbral and the iron rampart shield with under 25% load, but shield on a swap set is smarter anyway.

For higher NG+ you probably want a swappable slash weapon and pitchfire flasks for bosses that are highly resistant to holy/strike (I recommend Seawolf Cutlass for the massive base damage to take advantage of buffs, like this weapon).

        • This is one of my fav wpn in the game because of how buff works. Extremely powerful. I think the only wpn that beat it in terms of AR when buff is the trinity bardiche if you're at max STR, DEX and WIS scaling and buff it with Divine Holy wpn. But the obsidian pillar only need to be upgraded and buff with anything really and have an AR of 200+ regardless of your stats. You can transmute is as soon as the castle of storm and it will carry you through the game and save a lot of stats you'll be able to use somewhere else.

          • I think even if you have maximum possible strenght this weapon's damage will still be extremely close to Bonecrusher if you use buffs on both no maths on it but I'm 99% certain. It is also way lighter and doesn't have slow hitter. Only other greathammer that can actually outdamage this super late game is trinity scepter but you can never one hand that one which is the downside. And it's mostly because trinity scepter's fast hitter. Losing 68.5 damage from buffs on trinity scepter is pretty big especially with elemental weaknesses.

This is the best hammer. Especially if you use Arcane Weapon or Divine Weapon, adds an insane amount of damage due to this having the highest base damage in the game.

My build has 50 Magic 50 STR, and when buffed with Arcane Weapon, this thing does more damage than Northern Cross which scales S with STR and S with Magic. (Same upgrade level VI)

So I've been rocking an Endurance focused build and this thing is great if you're not pouring points into strength much!
