Oar in Salt and Sanctuary is a Poleaxe type weapon.

A large wooden oar scavenged from the wreckage of a longboat. It bears no modifications for use in combat but is a perfectly functional weapon without them, and the fishing communities of Coastrock's Tetraodon tribe have even developed a specialized martial art focused entirely on the use of oars for self-defense. Men and women alike are trained in this unique fighting style from an early age, and share the same responsibility for protecting their villages.

Notes and Tips:

  • At 50 Strength and 50 Dexterity this weapon has an Attack of 95.0 at tier VII.
  • Two-handing a weapon increases Strength by 50% for damage scaling, meaning you only need 34 Strength to reach the 50 Strength soft cap when two-handing a weapon.
  • Deals 100% Strike damage despite being classified as a poleaxe.
  • This weapon can only be used 2-handed until you unlock Pikeman Class 1 in the skill tree.
  • A Crossbow or Gun can be used during the Oar Only challenge (may be a bug because the challenge does not permit the use of any other weapon and even doesn't allow you to block with shields).
  • A Gun or Crossbow will deal 100% Strike damage when paired with the Oar weapon.

Location/Where to Find

  • Select "Oar only" in the challenge list when starting a new game.
  • This is currently the only way to obtain the oar in a playthrough.

In 1.0.0.9, it seems like with the Oar and Iron Pot only challenges, you can't use the block button *at all* if you're holding the weapon one-handed. I assume this is to avoid offhand-weapon exploits but it means you can't even use a shield in these challenges.

Also the Oar uses the Lock of Hair -> King's Orders upgrade path.

If you're gonna do an Oar Only Run; here's my advice:
Consider investing into weapon buffs. I went to prayer 5, stopped there. You get some decent heals, some good buffs, and that Guardian Sword thing. If an enemy is weak to holy, then guardian sword is gonna ****ing maul it. Incantations aren't off the table when doing an Oar Only Run, so may that help thee.

Make sure to pick up other types of buffs, though. Stained pages are early, relatively cheap too. Those'll help you against anything that's resistant to holy. Once yo ugot all you need from Devara's Light, consider switching a Creed if you want other buffs. The Three will give you a fire one and.. another one, I forget what. Though Devara's Light gives you a bunch of heals, which is useful if you forgone all healing / focus items for other stats (like i did.) since Orange Phials give HP and Focus.

honestly, it saddens me that you can't obtain this without doing the challenge because the moveset paired with the S strength scaling made bosses cakewalk
